India has finally touched base with the newly elected leader of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, who is set to be the next Prime Minister of Pakistan for a record third time.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh dispatched his special envoy Satinder K Lambah to Pakistan on Monday, 27 May, 2013 as a follow up to the conversation that took place on 12 May between him and Nawaz Sharif, President of the Pakistan Muslim League (N).
Lambah visited Lahore on Monday and met Sharif. He conveyed to Sharif, Manmohan Singh’s greetings and good wishes for his tenure as the prime minister of Pakistan. Sharif conveyed his deep appreciation for Prime Minister Singh’s message. They took the opportunity to discuss ways to take the peace dialogue forward to address all issues of concern to the two countries.
While the Indian government has done the diplomatic needful, it should not be seen as a signal that India is desperate to reconnect with Sharif, during whose prime ministership the infamous Kargil War was thrust on India even as the then Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had barely finished his goodwill visit to Pakistan in 1999.
